Brainstorming Session to develop plan of action for Model Disaster Management Plan for Zoological Parks on 19 December 2014

A Brainstorming Session was organized by NIDM to develop an action plan for identifying course of action for the development of Model Disaster Management Plan (DMP) for Zoological Parks (DMP) on 19th December 2014, Friday at 11.00 hrs at Conference Hall, NIDM, New Delhi.

The session was chaired by Executive Director, NIDM and representatives from MoEF, NDMA, Central Zoo Authority, IIPA, National Zoological Park, Amity University, National Tiger Conservation Authority, World Animal Protection, and NIDM participated.

During discussion, some important points for implementation were drawn like listing out all possible scenarios arising in zoo that requires action plan and working accordingly; preparing Standard Operating Procedures for overall management of the zoo; identifying and including experts in finalizing the Model DMP; preparation of evacuation plans; capacity building; and oganising regular mock drills and continuous training to handle the emergencies.

NIDM intends to prepare a Module on Disaster Management Plan for Zoological Parks at national level.

Roundtable Meetings on Innovations in Technologies for Disaster Rescue Efforts amongst ASEM Countries and Inauguration of the Virtual Knowledge Portal (VKP) and Meeting of the 24x7 PoCs of the EAS Countries, 4-5 December 2014, Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi

The two day Roundtable Meetings on "Innovations in Technologies for Disaster Rescue Efforts amongst Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) countries & Inauguration of the Virtual Knowledge Portal (VKP) and Meeting of the 24x7 Point of Contact (PoC)s of the East Asia Summit (EAS) countries" have been inaugurated by the Minister of State, Home, Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary on 4th December 2014 at 9:30 hrs at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The two days roundtable meetings have been organised by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs during 4th and 5th December 2014 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Shri Anil Wadha, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, Mrs Sneh Lata Kumar, Secretary (Border Management), Ministry of Home Affairs, Dr. Arbind Prasad, Director General, Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce have graced the inaugural session of the event. These meetings have been attended by delegates from 26 member countries from Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) countries and East Asia Summit (EAS) member countries, representative from European Union (EU) and Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat, participants from 10 International Organizations such as Asian Disaster Preparedness Center(ADPC), United Nations Platform for Space-based Information for Disaster Management and Emergency Response (UN-SPIDER), United Nations Children's Funds (UNICEF), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and Pacific(UNESCAP), South Asian Association Regional Center(SAARC) Disaster Management Centre, European Union Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department(ECHO) and Officials & experts from various Central Ministries, Armed Forces, State Governments, and Technical Organizations from India. More than 360 delegates participated in the event.

The Virtual Knowledge Portal (VKP), a web based tool to share knowledge & best practices related to natural disaster risk assessment, mitigation, and response among EAS countries has been launched by the Minister of State, Home, Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary during the inaugural session.

An exhibition on "Innovations in Technologies for Disaster Rescue Efforts", arranged by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) was inaugurated by the Minister of State, Home, Shri Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary. More than 40 domestic and international industries have participated in the exhibition.

These roundtable meetings have discussed and explored use of innovations in technologies for Disaster Rescue efforts amongst the ASEM countries. These meetings also deliberated opportunities to promote multilateralism in cross border assistance in the event of disasters and establish a mechanism for activating the 24x7 Point of Contacts of the EAS countries and discussed how innovations in technology can be utilized to save lives and reduce effective response time by the Governments.

Training conducted for staff of National Zoological Park, 21 November 2014

A one day training programme on Disaster Management for the staff of National Zoological Park (NZP) was conducted on 21 November 2014 at NIDM, IIPA Campus, Around 35 staff members from various departments of NZP were present during the event.

Objectives of the programme included handling disasters and ensuring visitor's safety. The staff members were trained on various aspects by experts of NIDM. The session was inaugurated in presence of Dr. Satendra, Executive Director, NIDM and Sh. Amitabh Agnihotri, Director, NZP. During the session on experience sharing sessions various issues like installation of alerting and communication systems, trained staff rotation and formation of quick response team, stampede prevention strategies, awareness for the visitor's proper utilization of existing resources and management of common predictable injuries were discussed. A detailed training session with hands on practice on Basic Life Support and First Aid was conducted by Dr. Saurabh Dalal, Disaster Health Section of NIDM and Mr. Nitesh Kumar Sr. Paramedic and Instructor, PCH.

NIDM is in process of development of Disaster Management Plan for the Zoo, this training was a part of the process and will further be followed by brainstorming sessions by the experts.
