ICL-UNESCO Meeting on Landslides, 14-16 June 2012, Kyoto, Japan

International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) has organized the ICL-UNESCO meeting of landslide experts from different countries during 14-16 June 2012 at Kyoto - Japan, to create teaching tools on landslide risk reduction for Asia and Pacific region. It invited selected expert members from India, Iran, Indonesia, Taiwan, New Zealand and Japan. Dr. Surya Parkash, Associate Professor, NIDM has been invited and sponsored by ICL to participate in this meeting. It provided to NIDM an opportunity to promote its role in the field of landslides risk reduction at international level. It has also helped the Institute to learn about the teaching tools related to landslide risk reduction available in other countries that may be found useful in the capacity enhancement at national level.

World Environment Day on 5th June 2012

NIDM observed "World Environment Day" on 5th June 2012 with the objective of generating awareness on safeguarding environment for disaster risk reduction.

Dr. Muzaffar Ahmed, Hon'ble Member, National Disaster Management Authority, was the Chief Guest of the function. Other guests who graced the occasion were Prof. V. K. Sharma, Hon'ble Vice-chairman of the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, Sri Prakash Mishra, Director General of the National Disaster Response Force, Dr. Leena Srivastava, Vice-chancellor of TERI University and many other dignitaries, officials & children.

The event was also an occasion of release of three publications of NIDM namely "Ecosystem Approach to Disaster Risk Reduction", "Environmental Extremes and Climate related Disasters & "Disaster Management, for school children".

Slogan & poem writing competition writing - hindi & english were organized for school children at various schools and winners were given prizes by the Chief Guest in the programme.

Validation Consultation for customized Modules of Incident Response System, 04-15 June 2012

The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), the nodal Institution for training and institutionalization of Incident Response System (IRS), is organizing the Validation Consultation in collaboration with United States Agency for international Development (USAID) and the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). The objective of the Consultation is to ensure that the IRS training Modules are customized to suit Indian Administrative System. The Validation Consultation is being held at Hotel Taj Vivanta near Khan Market, New Delhi from 4th to 8th June, 2012 and at National Institute of Disaster Management, New Delhi from 11th to 15th June, 2012.

The Validation Consultation was inaugurated by Dr. Satendra, Executive Director, NIDM on 4th June 2012. Mr Garry Robbins of USAID highlighted on the progress made in IRS training and institutionalization in India under the collaborative arrangement. Shri Arun Sahdeo, Consultant, NIDM made a presentation on objective and methodology of the Consultation. The Consultation is being attended by the Consultants involved in customization of the Modules, invited Resource Persons from State Governments, USFS Resource Persons and representatives from the NDMA, MHA, NIDM and USAID.


Workshop on "Disaster Management in SAARC Nations" at Dhaka, Bangladesh, 22-24 May 2012

The International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) organised the workshop on disaster management in SAARC nations at Dhaka, Bangladesh. The workshop was attended by about 40 senior level officers of SAARC member states. The DG- NDRF, Executive Director- NIDM and Director SAARC Disaster Management Centre and Joint Secretary- NDMA, GOI participated in the three days workshop.

The inaugural programme was attended by the Honble Minister Home of Bangladesh Ms Shahara. She said that an agreement on rapid response to natural disaster has been signed in the SAARC 17th Summit to ensure that no member state is overwhelmed by a natural calamity.

Disaster Management and Relief Division Secretary Dr M Aslam Alam Neal Walker, UN resident coordinator, were present among others at the ceremony, which was presided over by Brig Gen (Retd) Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah, Director General of Fire Service and Civil Defence.
